Bird's Opening

Bird's opening is very rarely played. White may be exerting influence over the central e5-square but with his very first move he has weakened his king's position. Black's logical reaction is 1... d7-d5 to occupy the centre. In one of the main variations both players post their knights on f3 and f6 and then fianchetto their bishops to g2 and g7. Here short castling is obligatory.
